I’m a fifth-year senior at Drexel University with an immense passion for all things fiber arts. As I reach the end of my academic career, I want to use my senior project as an opportunity to explore and share just some of the things I love about this craft. While I’m by no means an expert craftsman, I’ve been a fiber artist in one way or another for almost 10 years and it’s a practice that has always brought me joy and inspired me to prioritize keeping a creative outlet in my life.

Fiber arts as a label encompasses a large variety of handicrafts and has a fascinating history dating back thousands of years. It’s so much more than just the physical act of creating something, serving as a tool for community building, storytelling, and bringing more beauty into the world. Fiber arts is a traditionally undervalued and underappreciated art form, largely due to the fact that it has long been relegated to the categories of “grandma activities” or “women’s work.” These descriptors are not truly an insult, but I hope this blog serves as a way for people to learn something new about this craft and highlight it as an artistic pursuit that has both an immense historical prevalence and an important place in the modern art and hobby spaces. Even if you don’t decide to pick up a sewing needle or crochet hook, I hope you enjoy learning more about this amazing artform.
